The agency’s Nyanza region executive Fr Lawrence Nyaanga said liquor licensing department has been turned into a safe haven for cartels bent on swindling the County of revenue.

He called for a swift probe by investigating agencies with view to weeding them out.

“There had been challenges in addressing problems related to liquor partly because of these powerful cartels who seem to operate with abandon,” Fr Nyaanga said.

He said those responsible should be arrested and face the full force of the law.

Early this week, Kisii County regional Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission executive Abraham Kemboi said that they have been receiving numerous complaints regarding operations at the liquor licensing department.

He said Commission has written to leaders in the devolved unit asking them to recall all the alcohol licenses as one measure to clean up the mess in the department.

Separately, Fr Nyaanga also called on the County to address problems of noisy pubs located in residential places.

He also accused drunk chiefs for the proliferation of illicit liquor in certain areas near Kisii town.

“Though the government had been undertaking crackdowns on illicit brew joints we still have some administrators who are lax. The government should replace them with people who have commitment to their work,” he said.
