Nachu Chief Daniel Ng'ang'a says over reliance on relief food has sent a humiliating image to the Nachu residents.

Speaking yesterday at Renguti Shopping Centre, Nachu Ward of Kikuyu Constituency in Kiambu County during a public meeting, Ng'ang'a urged farmers to take the advantage of the current rains to plant variety of crops.

“Farmers should take the opportunity of the current ranis and plant different crops,” said Ng'ang'a.

Ng'ang'a also urged farmers to plant traditional varieties like yams to beat the constant hunger being witnessed in the area.

“Nachu is a drier than the rest of Kiambu and farmers should think of including traditional crops in their farms,” Ng'ang'a said.

The Chief noted that the residents of Nachu and Karai have been depending on relief for a long time.

“Residents of Nachu should think outside the box and devise means of being self-sufficient in food production,” said Ng'ang'a.

“The fact that you have a land means you have to utilise it to boost food production. When rains come, farmers should plant early maturing plants and traditional crops to beat hunger,” said the chief.

The administrator urged the county government to assist farmers with certified seeds to increase their production and enable them to stop relying on government on relief food.

“The county government has responsibility to assist farmers with quality seeds to ensure that they are self -reliant in food production,” he said.

Ng'ang'a however warned the residents from converting their plots into residential usage to help in the production of food.
