The Nairobi City County government has disbanded the Anti-Dumping Unit that was based at City Hall.

The unit was termed as 'ineffective', now the duty of garbage collection being handed over to sub-county administrators.

The officers of the defunct Anti-Dumping Unit have been redeployed to sub-counties and would be reporting to area bosses.

Acting County Executive for Water, Environment, Energy and Natural Resources, Mohamed Dagane, said the 17 administrators will be responsible for waste collection within their areas of jurisdiction.

"The Nairobi City County Government will from today devolve garbage collection to the sub-county level to deal with the menace of illegal dumping and uncontrolled garbage," said Dagane in a statement on Tuesday.

The Environment boss said that each sub-county administrator will control two trucks and have enough manpower to deal with garbage collection menace.

The move comes after private contractors started a go-slow demanding over Sh150 million arrears accruing from the last administration.

The county government, led by Governor Mike Sonko, has pledged to pay them once the audit of last regime's expenditures is complete.
