Nairobi County Health executive Bernard Muia has said they are on high alert following outbreak of cholera in the city.

The county government has activated cholera treatment centers and enhanced water treatment in the wake of a cholera outbreak that has hit the country’s capital.

Speaking at City Hall, Muia confirmed 33 cholera victims are hospitalized in various health facilities in the  city and doctors are expected to release final results on the suspected cholera outbreak on Wednesday.

Dr. Muia further indicated that so far 336 cases of suspected cholera have been reported over the last two months.

Dr. Muia further banned open air cooking in the city to prevent an outbreak of cholera in Nairobi adding that stringent measures will be enforced to ensure outside caterers adhere to health standards.

On Friday, three top government officials and several staff from the Trade and the Treasury ministries were treated for cholera-related symptoms. This was after they ate food served during a trade event at KICC.

Muia however said those sources of food particularly the outsourced food should not be served at any event until the cooking of that food has been checked by a public health officer.
