The County government of Nairobi has announced a major crackdown on illegal use of plastic bags.
Environment Chief Executive Emma Mukuhi said the county government has established that there is still more use of plastic bags which were recently banned in the country.
He said the county is closely working with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to ensure consumers of the banned bags are arrested and charged before courts of law.
"The consumption of plastics bags is still high in Nairobi," he said.
"We are yet to establish who the suppliers are but mark me whoever will be found either making, distributing or using plastic bags will face the law."
Some analysts late 2017 criticised the ban which they said could cause problems for poor Nairobi residents who rely on the bags “in the absence of a functioning sewage system and of public toilets that don't charge a fee."
NEMA last year ordered all plastic bags manufacturers to clear their stock before August 28, 2017.
This was in line with the Gazette notice by the Environment and Natural Resources CS, Prof Judi Wakhungu on February 28, 2017, that banned the use, manufacture and importation of plastic carrier bags after six months.
