Nairobi county has been crowned the highest local revenue generator among the 47 counties with a massive Sh9.62 billion collections in the 2015/16 financial year.
In a report released by the Controller of Budget Agness Odhiambo, and through the County Governments' Budgetary Implementation and Review report, Nairobi County emerged as the best in terms of revenues collected across the counties for the first nine months in the 2015/2016 fiscal year.
"In the period under review, Nairobi City County recorded the highest amounts of local revenue at 9.62 billion shillings, closely followed by the county government of Kiambu," read the report in part.
Kiambu followed suit recording a collection of Sh1.82 billions then Mombasa County with Sh1.58 billion closing the top three performers.
At the bottom in local revenue generators are Mandera Sh59.65 million, Lamu county with Sh45 million and finally Tana River county with a Sh18 million collection.
However, Laikipia County government achieved the highest proportion with 78 percent, closely followed by the Homa Bay county at 76 percent and finally Baringo County with 67.5 per cent.
Nairobi Chair of the Public Accounting Committee, Robert Mbatia hinted that the top ranking was a big indicator that City Hall was headed in the positive direction and encouraged the various executives to take the opportunity and implement development projects across the county.
He, however, criticized the finance department, issuing that they were using monies collected at the source instead of depositing the funds at the County Revenue Fund.
"If the finance department does not stop using funds collected at source, we as the PAC members will immediately petition the Senate to eventually stop approving the said funds," said Mbatia.
