Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday said the collaboration will also see new health facilities constructed in the city.

"This is the first Public-Private Partnership project of its kind in the county of Nairobi," Sonko said during the launch of the oxygen plant.

"The partnership involved Nairobi City County Government, the United Nations and the private sector. Installation of this plant marks a big stride towards realisation of affordable and accessible health care."

During his inaugural speech in January, Sonko promised to improve Nairobi's health sector saying "a health population is a productive population".

"The oxygen produced here will be used in Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital, Pumwani Maternity Hospital as well as all health facilities in the county. It will also be sold to other health facilities, both public and private," the former Makadara MP said.

He said as long as he remains governor, Nairobi residents should be sure of receiving quality healthcare service.

The launch was presided over by Deputy President William Ruto and a dozen representatives from the UN.
