Public health officers in Nairobi county have been accused of laxity in their duties and allowing uninspected meat to make way into butcheries, restaurants, and even boarding schools.
According to county health officer Peter Mureithi, cows and donkeys are stolen during the night, slaughtered and the meat is transported to Nairobi for sale.
He said that almost every week, two or three donkeys are stolen in Nakuru county and their heads, bones and skins dumped in the bushes.
“It is too bad because we have been fighting this vice only for it to return when health officers relax. We feel so bad because people only deworm their domesticated donkeys and ignore other animal diseases, yet their meat is sold to people,” Mureithi issued.
On Friday, three donkeys were found to have been slaughtered in Kamae Forest, with Lari Police Commander Martin Waititu calling on the public to report such incidences for necessary action.
Nairobi residents are now urging public health officers within the city county and its environs to inspect meat in all local eateries and boarding schools before offering it for human consumption.
