Nairobi county leads the levels of crime in the country with the local rate about twice the national average of 9 per cent.

This is according to a survey by Ipsos Synovate released in last year in June 2016.

The report said that levels of violent crime had gone down nationally from 48 per cent in November 2015, to 35 per cent in June 2016.

There was a drop of 2,456 in reported crime cases between 2013 and 2014.

This represented a 3.42 percentage point decline.

However, crime cases recorded an upward trend from 2014 onwards, a trend suggesting that the general crime rate has been going up for the past three years.

All the counties analysed recorded an increase in crimes reported in 2016, the only exceptions being Kisumu and Mombasa.

West Pokot and Marsabit recorded mean numbers of crimes in general.

The number of reported crimes in Marsabit in 2016 was almost 9 times lower than those that were reported in Kiambu.

However, crimes reported in Marsabit showed a rapid increase over the three-year period.

Nationally, there was a 6.2 per cent increase in the number of crimes reported, an indication that they are on the rise.

The survey also found that despite there being a decrease in crimes reported in different parts of the country, they are generally on an upward trend.
