The Nairobi county government has finalised plans to construct safe pedestrian walkways along Nairobi's major roads.
The project, according to Governor Mike Sonko, will be rolled out starting February and its implementation will run until December 2018 when all major roads will be expected to have the walkways.
Currently, pedestrians scramble for space with motorists a development that increases accident along busy roads like Mombasa Road and Langata Road.
"My government is ensuring a congestion-free Nairobi County where public transport is orderly and flows," Sonko said Wednesday after inspecting construction of the new Donholm road whose construction is projected to be completed by July.
"By the end of the year we will provide safe, paved and lit walkways since most people walk to work."
He said his administration will strive to ensure Nairobi residents live and work in environments that promote business and peaceful co-existence.
He said the people of Nairobi look forward to a better life under the devolved system of governance hence "we only have one option- to succeed along the principles of continuous improvement."
