A major crisis looms in Nairobi county government as MCAs threaten that they will not pass the 2016/17 budget even as the deadline draws nearer.

The MCAs have until Wednesday to approve the proposed 2016-17 Sh36 billion budgetary estimates. The ward representatives allege that the executive has evidently failed to account for funds allocated for various projects in the previous financial years.

“We will never pass this budget. It is not a matter of Jubilee or Cord. It is all of us jointly because we are much affected,” noted the minority whip Hon Hashim Kamau.

He said a massive Sh5.1 billion set aside in the past three budgets is yet to be released and the executive has never responded to the serious audit queries.

“We just can't be used as rubber-stamps each year, yet the poor Nairobians are not benefiting. Many of the proposed projects have since stalled because someone somewhere is sitting on the allocated monies,” Kamau added.

However, the budget Committee chairman Hon Michael Ogada has said he will table the budget in the house on Wednesday.

A fortnight ago, majority leader Hon Elias Otieno issued that the assembly would never approve the 2016/17 budget until when the Ward Development Funds are released.
