The number of counties in the country may be reduced to 46 if a proposed law that seeks to scrap Nairobi county is passed.
The bill, which is sponsored by Murang'a Senator Kembi Gitura seeks to revert the leadership of Nairobi to the national government.
"It seeks to amend the constitution so as to reduce the number of counties to 46 by excluding Nairobi from the ambit of county government," Kembi stated.
The proposed law will give power to the president to nominate a cabinet secretary to head the city.
"The bill further seeks to establish Nairobi as the national capital city and empowers the President to nominate a Cabinet Secretary to head the same," he said.
