Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has announced plans to make Nairobi City an investment and tourism hub.

Balala said the National Government and Nairobi County Government, through a collaborative programme which he co-chairs with Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe, have made elaborate plans that will make the capital a tourist’s destination.

"We want to change Nairobi from sanitation, road network, lighting, electricity, water and all other areas so that we can create an environment that is conducive, safe and clean in order to attract investors in the city. We will make Nairobi the new legacy of Kenya," he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

The CS was speaking during the grand opening of a new shopping complex at Village Market on Friday night.

The new state-of-the art shopping complex, estimated to be Sh4 billion, is an expansion of the 22-year-old facility.

It will host a food market, a 215-room hotel and a 30,000 square foot gym which will be the largest in the region.

Hamed Ehsani, the Managing Director of Village Market, said the multi-billion complex will also feature conferencing facilities for up to 500 people, and a rooftop pool.

"Village Market, throughout the years, has sought to understand the needs and desires of Nairobi and to push the boundaries of retail and recreation by introducing the most cutting-edge concepts from around the world," said Ehsani.

The ceremony was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Judy Wakhungu (Environment), Dan Kazungu (Mining) and City DG Polycarp Igathe.
