The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has said it is working on a project to phase out all pit latrines in the slum areas at a cost of Sh1 billion.
The World Bank-funded project aims at converting all existing pit latrines as well as septic tanks into conventional pour-flush toilets.
According to the Nation, NWSC chairman Raphael Nzomo highlighted that the project that began in February will ensure all pit latrines are filled up and new conventional ablution blocks with flushing water and a shower are constructed.
“We have seen that most slum dwellers use communal pit latrines which are sometimes unhygienic and we need to give them proper sanitation facilities with adequate quality,” said Nzomo.
Twelve informal settlement areas will benefit from the project. These include Kayole Soweto, Mukuru/Makongeni, Riverbank, Mathare and Matopeni.
The project will see an approximated 17,226 households connected to the network while 6,438 water connections will be installed in a period spanning 17 months.
