Athi Water Services Board (AWSB) CEO Malaquen Milgo has said that the controversial multi-billion project meant to tap and supply water from Muranga to Nairobi will proceed as planned.

Speaking on Friday, Mr Milgo refuted claims from a section of politicians that the Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT) was bound to harm the environment.

Milgo instead said that the project had earlier been given a clean bill of health after it was

“I would also like to reassure the community in Murang’a and other downstream counties and users that the detailed design for the Northern Collector Water Tunnel Project has considered all findings of the hydrological and ecological studies to ensure that the project shall neither result in low river flows nor divert water during low river flow seasons,” he said.

“Most importantly we urge all partners and stakeholders to support the implementation of the NCT1 and other subsequent projects to be implemented under the Nairobi Water Masterplan,” he added.

Milgo also revealed that the project would be a big boost to the Nairobi water supply system where it will raise the supply by 140,000 cubic metres each day.

The World Bank funded project has caused much controversy with a section of leaders saying that it was a beginning to the wide desertification for parts of Central Kenya and the Tana delta.
