Nairobi Governor-elect, Mike Sonko, has pledged to clean up the capital city.
Sonko who trounced incumbent Dr Evans Kidero in the August 8 polls, said he would make Nairobi, the cleanest city, just like Kigali, in Rwanda.
"It is important for us to know that maintaining a clean environment is vital to our survival and my government will provide the needed resources to clean," he said.
To demonstrate his commitment, Sonko announced the distribution of 20 waste bins, 10 wheelbarrows, 10 shovels, 10 rakes, 10 wellington boots, hand gloves and other items to all wards in Nairobi for regular communal labour.
"If we want to be free from cholera and other deadly diseases, we need to keep our environment clean. I implore you to desist from dumping waste indiscriminately. Let us make good use of the materials provided and ensure that we clean our homes and clear out our gutters regularly," urged the Jubilee Party governor-elect.
Speaking during a cleanup exercise, Friday, the outgoing Nairobi senator, said if not like Kigali, Nairobi would be among the cleanest cities in Africa.
"This will go a long way to stop the perennial flooding that we face during the raining season. I encourage Nairobi residents to be agents of change and active supporters of the environment," he added.
