Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has said water supply in the city will continue to be highly regulated despite the rainy season.
NWSC board chairman Raphael Nzomo said the main source that supplies water to the over four million city residents still has insufficient water.“The water level at Ndakaini Dam which is our main water supplier is still only at 33 per cent but we were hoping that it could reach its previous levels. If it continues this way we will probably reach the 50 per cent mark which is only sufficient to take us through to September when we expect the next rains,” Nzomo said.Nairobi residents have been buying water expensively from vendors since December 2016 following a failure of short rains that left water levels at Ndakaini dam at an all-time low.“We had announced last month that residents would start receiving normal supply by April but this has not happened as the rains have been erratic,” Nzomo added. He said city residents should use the available water sparingly. In March, the national and Nairobi county governments promised to sink at least 40 boreholes within Nairobi at a cost of Sh200 million to cushion city residents from perennial water shortages. The project is yet to be rolled out.
