The county highlighted that Rivers Ngong, Nairobi, Mbagathi and Kirichwa have been turned into channels due to huge amounts of solid wastes thrown into them.

Speaking on Monday 26 September, Environment Executive Peter Kimori said the county had issued notices to developers and companies polluting them to find alternative disposal sites.

"Notices have been issued to the firms. We also urge the residents who discharge the wastes to stop since the water is serving the whole city," said Kimori.

He added that eight people have been arrested by enforcement officers and fined for polluting the rivers.

On the positive side, Kimori said that the clean-up work that started in Kawangware has prompted more people to apply for sewerage connections from the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.

The county has mapped 278 polluters of rivers mainly factories in Nairobi's industrial area.
