Nakuru Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Masinde has confirmed the death toll of those killed in the Naivasha fire tragedy to be 40.

According to Citizen, the DCC said that the number was likely to go up after police began combing the scene of the accident.

Eyewitnesses say the accident occurred at 9.30 pm after a Nakuru-bound lorry ferrying gas cylinders lost control Near Karai area and then rammed into a petroleum tanker and three other vehicles that were headed for Nairobi before exploding.

The fire from the burning lorry then spread to 13 other vehicles which were burnt beyond recognition.

Among those feared dead are police officers who were traveling to Nairobi.

There was a massive traffic jam that left many road users stuck and as the fire brigade and police collaborated to ease the congestion.

At present, the fire has already been put out and roads cleared.
