“Our plight has been caused by a directive from the Ministry of fisheries to ban fishing in Lake Naivasha,” said John Okoth a fish monger.

The ministry of fisheries has banned fishing in Lake Naivasha for three months to pave way for restocking.

Issuing the ban, the deputy director of fisheries Samuel Kenyanya noted that there was need to conserve the water body.

However the fishmongers objected the move saying that annual ban starts from 1st of June to 31st of August and they were not consulted.

However the ministry of health has defended the ban stating that it came early this year due to cholera outbreak.

“The ban is total infringement to our rights because we were not consulted,” said Getred Wambui fishmonger.

The ban has seen the price of skyrocketing in the town. The price of a middle fish is going for Sh700 from Sh500.

The operations of the fishmongers now hang in balance after the Ministry of health failed to lift the ban.
