Residents of a Naivasha village are in shock after two secondary school students drowned while swimming in River Malewa.
The two had joined their classmates in a swimming expedition on Sunday when the incident occurred in the village located 20kms from Naivasha town.
One of the victims is son to area MCA John Chege.
According to an eye witness Paul Kimani, a group of students from Gatamaiyu Secondary School were swimming in the river when one of them got overwhelmed.
Kimani said that one of his colleagues jumped in to assist but they both drowned as their shaken friends watched in horror.
“The first boy panicked and grabbed his rescuer who had dived in and in the process both of them drowned,” he said.
He added that this was not the first time that students had swum at the section of the river whose levels have risen sharply.
In the recent past, heavy rains have pounded the catchment area seeing water levels rise on the river sharply.
