The Naivasha Sub-County Medical Officer of Health (SCMOH), Dr Oren Ombiro, has allayed fears of a cholera outbreak in the area.
Dr Ombiro said so far no cases of the disease have been reported in the sub-county and its environs and there was no cause for alarm.
He has however urged the residents to immediately visit the nearest health facilities in cases of diarrhoea for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Addressing the press in his office, Dr Ombiro asked the residents to adhere to the preventive measures in order to contain the disease.
“I want to urge the people to heighten surveillance and ensure that they report any suspected cases of cholera and they should stick to the recommended preventive measures,” he said.
He said health personnel were currently involved in conducting sensitization meetings in parts of the sub-county including Karagita, Kihoto, Kayole and Naivasha town to educate the residents on the basic preventive measures against cholera.
“These basic preventive measures are often ignored and the consequences realized when it is too late, thus the need to remind the people of the importance of their health,” he added.
Among other measures, Dr. Ombiro urged residents to dispose human waste in pit latrines, dispose general refuse safely, boil drinking water, wash hands before handling food and after visiting the toilets and eat food at recommended hygienic places.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ombiro has called for the fencing of or relocation of the Kayole dumpsite to improve on hygiene.
He said that during rainy seasons or when it was windy, all the dirt from the open dumpsite is swept or blown into the town and neighbouring estates thus posing a health problem to the people.
He suggested that investors should consider utilizing the waste economically for example in generating energy.
