Police in Naivasha Sub County have raised an alarm over the presence of fake Sh1000 notes in circulation after unknown people dumped a sack full of the currency in a local river.
The two suspects ferrying the cash estimated to be over Sh10 million, threw it into River Malewa along the Naivasha-Nakuru road on realising that police were tracking them.
Confirming the incident, Naivasha police boss Charles Kortok said that they had recovered over Sh 0.5 million within minutes of arriving on the scene.
“This was a small fraction of the sum dumped into the river and we are calling on those who had collected the cash to hand it over,” said Kortok.
The move led to a major stampede as unsuspecting members of the public nearly drowned as they fought over the free ‘cash’.
Their joy was however short-lived as it emerged that the cash was fake though many decided to keep the loot as others handed it over to police.
Drama started after a vehicle ferrying the cash from Nairobi towards Nakuru noticed the Highway patrol vehicle.
The police boss said that they had launched investigations into the matter adding that it was a matter of time before they caught up with those behind the deal.
He said that the vehicle carrying the loot was heading to Western Kenya from Nairobi adding that no suspect had been arrested.
