Speaking during a tour of the facility, Mutembei said that the prison was one of the most sought after facilities due to the proper behaviour of the inmates. He also said that the prison rarely had cases of fighting or disagreements.

“In many other facilities we have had cases of inmates fighting and killing each other. There have also been cases of rape and sodomy. However we have not heard of such in this area and we are positive that the inmates here are reformed,” he added

Mutembei observed that inmates had also become more open and honest with each other, and with the authorities

“They choose to discuss their issues instead of engaging in strikes. They talk about their issues amicably which has been a great challenge in other prisons,” he said.

The Officer in charge of the facility Patrick Mwenda cited that there are several inmates who want to be transferred to the facility, and that this was due to the facility’s high level discipline and their good education.

“We provide the best education despite our poor resources. We have also been able to produce the top students in the country’s prison which is very encouraging,” he added.

Mwenda appealed to Kenyans to accept the inmates once their jail term came to an end

“It’s important to know that they are not the same people who came to jail. They are reformed and ready to serve the country,” he said.
