Naivasha Sub County Medical Officer Dr Oren Ombiro said persistent polio campaign in the sub county is aimed at boosting immunities of children under five.

In the past polio immunisation campaign has faced opposition in the area.

“We have done series of meetings with local religious leaders and we have explained on the importance of the exercise,” said Ombiro.

“Most people in this area declined the exercise on religion grounds,” observes Ombiero.

Ombiero said that they decided to approach the religious leaders after facing a lot of opposition last year hence failing to reach their target.

"Once church leaders are convinced the society is also convinced; they are better placed to convert the rest of the members,” notes Ombiero.

"The persistent campaign is necessitated by the need to maintain high population immunity in the sub county in view of the fact that Kenya borders Somalia which is currently re - infected with imported polio virus,” said Ombiero.
