Residents of Naivasha may find a solution to the perennial water shortage and high fluoride levels in water thanks to a multi-million water project currently underway. The Sh1.2 billion project will see the town get more supply of fluoride-free water from the Aberdares forest in the neighbouring Nyandarua County. According Naivasha Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Engineer James Gichana, the town would get a further 15,000 cubic meters daily from the Aberdares. He added that they were engaging different partners and donors on the project which would see the issue of acute water shortage in the town fully addressed. He said that the water would be used to dilute the borehole water from Naivasha town so as to reduce the high fluoride levels. “We have already identified a place where a dam will be built in Nyandarua and a treatment plant in Naivasha,” he said. Gichana stated that the demand for water in Naivasha stood at over 20,000 cubic meters per day noting that the water from the Aberdare would help reduce the gap. He said that they were committed to improving their services in the town but pointed out to rising debts as their major challenges. “We are currently owed over Sh61 million by various agencies including government institutions and this is affecting service delivery,” he said. He identified flower farms as the leading users of water in Naivasha while admitting that many of the area residents relied on water from boreholes. “We want to make sure that area residents have piped water in their houses in the coming year and we believe that this is achievable,” he said. On the sewer system, Gichana said that plans were underway to refurbish the sewer system at a cost of Sh1 billion. He said that studies were going on to resolve the issue adding that once the plan was ready all estates in the town would be connected to the sewer line.
