Irate residents of Karagita, Naivasha Sub County on Thursday set ablaze a car as they protested over the closure of a road leading to Lake Naivasha.
The residents protested along Moi South Lake Road for the second day after the road was allegedly closed by a private developer who recently bought the land.
“This has been the road that we have been using for years, connecting this road to the lake. We heard it was sold out and now this developer has closed it claiming it is not meant for the public,” said Kimani Muhia, a resident.
The residents on Thursday morning woke up to barricade the road that links the town to the lower region and the extensive lake region.
“We have been angered by individuals who have been shamelessly grabbing public land and going scot free. We will push for our rights until this matter is resolved in our favour,” said James Wanyoike, a trader.
Maella ward MCA Mujinga Kariuki who arrived at the scene called for independent government interventions into the matter.
“We want the relevant authorities to produce the map of the land and ascertain that the land is rightfully for the public. These corridors should be opened and no individual should grab public land,” he said.
He also called for relevant security measures to be deployed and lamented that the police officers sent to calm the residents down were from Nakuru.
“I wonder why the security officers sent here were from Nakuru instead of our own officers here. Is there something being hidden?” he wondered.
