The Naivasha slaughterhouse is set for closure following health concerns raised after Naivasha Water and Sewerage Company (NAIWASCO) disconnected the water supply to the facility.
According to Sub-county Head of Livestock Unit Mariam Nakir, the abattoir may be forced to shut down since it cannot operate without water.
“There is no water since it has been disconnected and we cannot allow operations to continue because it could be dangerous,” she said.
The water supply was cut after it emerged that the slaughter facility owed NAIWASCO a debt of Ksh 1 million.
With the imminent closure, chairman of the slaughterhouse Ezekiel Githinji said that the county government was failing them since they pay stipulated charges to the county government in exchange for quality services.
“They increased the amount we were paying previously from Ksh 170 to Ksh 250 everyday for goats and we did not complain. But they have let us down now that water has been disconnected owing to arrears which they have not paid,” he said.
Douglas Ng’ang’a, a businessman dealing with sale of goats to the slaughterhouse, expressed fears over a possible loss of business should the slaughterhouse close down.
They have asked Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to address the matter as quick as possible.
