Naivasha Children’s officer Nancy Cherono has urged Nakuru County government to come to the rescue of hundreds of street children roaming streets in Naivasha and its environs.
The officer stated that the number of children on streets has risen tremendously.
Speaking in Naivaha town on Friday, officer Cherono added that most of the street children are now being used as agents of crime and other social crimes by some criminals.
“We as the children department are concerned over the increasing number of street children in this town, we need the support of the county government to rehabilitate these children,” said Cherono.
She estimated that more than 800 children have been abandoned and are roaming the Naivasha streets noting that many of the street children are those abandoned by their parents and guardians.
Officer Cherono added that most rehabilitation centres in Naivasha are full and cannot accommodate more children. The officer said that there is need for the government to set aside funds or establish more rehabilitation centres that will accommodate street children.
She observed that the constitution agitates for protection of children adding that their rights are being violated.
The officer said that her department has started a programme to ensure that street kids are taken to rehabilitation centres so that they can be taken to school.
