Naivasha member of Parliament John Kihagi said Tuesday there is an urgent need to specify the orphans involved so that they can also be given special care and attention.

According to Kihagi, the children who are in most cases left at a tender age, are vulnerable and some get depressed.

"As an office, we want to establish a platform where we can be able to carry out surveillance for the children. We can also seek to secure them with food and proper education," said Kihagi

According to the MP, his office had a professional counselor who would talk to the children and help them relieve the burden of the parents death.

Kihagi argued that the number was increasing greatly, leaving majority of the children desperate.

His opinion was seconded by members of county assembly who argued that schools should include the testing and screening of cancer among students.

Viwandani MCA Eunice Mureithi argued that this will prompt easier detection and treatment of the students, saying that in most cases, the cancer went undetected until it was very late.

"The screening should be done when they are testing for pregnancy in schools. They should also have a professional doctor who would look into the care and treatment of cancer students," she added.

Ms Mureithi argued that the nurses in high schools and tertiary institutions should also be taken for training on how to handle cancer patients.

"Its very unfortunate that some students drop out of school once they discover they have cancer. I feel that we should have caregivers who will look after such students at least in schools," she added.
