Naivasha Women for Peace Coordinator Purity Wanjira has raised a red flag over the increased cases of parents abandoning children in Ngondu area. Wanjira cited that most parents go to Narok for business leaving the children under the care of an older member of the society, which posed a great danger. She cited that most of the girls in the area had dropped out of school as their parents leave them to take care of their siblings. “The dropout rate in the area is very worrying. Majority of the children have opted out of school as they cannot manage to fend for their young ones and concentrate in schools,” she added. She called on the children’s department to carry a crackdown on such parents and bring them to book. “They should be arrested and charged before the court of law for abandoning their children. It beats logic how a parent can go for a whole week and leave a two year old child in the care of her nine year old daughter,” she cited. Wanjira appealed to the teachers in the area to help in identifying the children who had quit school to take care of menial jobs. “We hope that they will use their register and try to track down where these children have disappeared to. Despite schools reopening this week some have not stepped in any class,” she added.
