Nakumatt Supermarket has been dealt another serious blow following the closure of two more of its branches.
As more branches close several employees are likely to be affected as the country is reportedly cutting its staff.
This follows the closure of its Bamburi branch in Mombasa and the Lunga Lunga outlet in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.
Prior to this the retailer chain closed three of its outlets Thika Road Mall (Thika Road), Next Gen (on Mombasa Road) and Westgate in Westlands, Nairobi.
According to
Bonface Kavuvi, Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers secretary-general all employees affected have been sent on 'compulsory leave'.
“It is improper for Nakumatt to send these workers on the so-called leave yet it is yet to settle their salaries stretching back months,” he said in a telephone interview.
“At the end of the day, some people will most likely lose their jobs. However, if Nakumatt wants to declare anybody redundant, they should follow the law and our collective bargaining agreement.”
