A silly mistake by a disgruntled smoker left more than 100 people killed.
It all started when a tanker overturned at Sachagwan along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway and hordes of locals rushed to the scene to siphon oil gushing out of the tanker.
Witnesses said people felt bad that police officers were preventing them from scooping the oil.
This led to a deliberate move to light the highly flammable liquid.
“We heard a loud burst and the next thing was people wailing in pain. Others run to the bush while burning,” a resident said during an interview with a local media on February 1 2009.
The January 2009 incident remains one of the deadliest accidents to have had hit Nakuru.
The tragedy was a painful lesson to residents. Today, even if a tankers rolls along the highway people would run for their dear lives;
