An official of The National Transport and Safety Authority has lamented over the high number of deaths attributed to motorbike taxi operators in the country.
Timothy Mibei, while addressing a group of boda boda operators welfare groups leaders at Safari Park Hotel during a Public Transport and Safety Forum on Tuesday noted that more than ten boda boda operators die daily in the country through accidents and criminal activities.
Mibei urged the bodaboda organizations in the country to screen their members and cooperate with law enforcers to stamp out lawlessness among their members.
He further noted that majority of accidents were caused due to ignorance and negligence of traffic rules among the boda boda operators, and warned that the government would draft independent laws that will completely put the transport sector under the watchful eye of the government.
“It is unfortunate that many deaths are being caused through road accidents and crimes connected with boda boda operators. If you could screen yourselves and follow traffic rules, then we cannot be talking of a bout over ten number of death on a daily basis in the country,” he said.
“Those criminals who target boda boda riders are among yourselves and it is you who openly break traffic rules and cause accidents. Am sorry to announce here that the government is being pushed to the wall and some hard decisions will have to be made to solve this madness once and for all in order to save lives,” added the officer.
