Most high-rise buildings in Nakuru town are yet to comply with a regulation requiring them to build better ramps to provide easy access by people with disabilities.
Nakuru County Human Rights Network director David Kuria said people with disabilities had problems accessing the buildings, some of which house public offices.
“This is a constitutional requirement and some of the owners of these buildings are still taking time to construct the ramps despite them having been aware of the same,” Kuria told our reporter.
A spot-check revealed that most people with disabilities in wheelchairs could not access both private and government offices but were being served at ground floors.
Last year, Fred Owako, the chairman of Nakuru County Association of People with Disabilities (APDK ) chairman wrote to the owners of public and private buildings asking them to set up ramps.
However, one year on, the service providers including banks, hotels, telecommunication companies, supermarkets among others are yet to install the facilities.
Kuria has now urged the business people to comply with the requirements to enable people with disabilities to acquire services with ease.
