The County Government of Nakuru will use close to Sh 2.5 million to rehabilitate cemeteries in the county even as it plans to acquire land to build more cemeteries to replace the current ones that have reached full capacity. This was revealed by the County’s minister for Lands, physical planning and Housing Rachael Maina when he addressed journalists in her office after holding a meeting with the ministry’s physical planning department senior officers. Maina said that the county government was concerned about the state of cemeteries in the county especially the two major ones in Nakuru town namely; North Cemetery and South Cemetery and added that the county government was desperately seeking land to construct new cemeteries to offer burial services in the urban centre. “We are desperately looking for land to construct new cemeteries. We are aware that the current ones are in a pathetic state as they have reached full capacity, however, we will rehabilitate them to provide security and sanity,’’ said the minister. She announced that the county government had set aside funds to cater for fencing and repair of burial ceremony tents within cemeteries in Nakuru town, Naivasha, Molo, Njoro, Rongai, Subukia and Gilgil. She added that security will be enhanced to prevent vandalism in the public burial sites.
