Kiamaina Chief Peter Kariuki has challenged the devolved units to equip and empower youth through provision of vocational training.
Speaking today at Kiamaina playground, Bahati Ward, Nakuru County during a public baraza, Kariuki said that the devolved units should prioritize the interests of youth.
“Youth are pillars of a nation and lack of interests in the welfare of youth is a national crisis,” said Kariuki.
He however warned of skewed allocation of devolved resources and corruption at the expense of the public.
“There is need for proper allocation of public resource so that youth can benefit through provision of quality vocational education,” said Kariuki.
Kariuki said that village polytechnics should be increased to absorb the raising number of students being locked out every year by schools.
“We need to increase the number of vocational training institutions especially at village levels to absorb the students who fail to proceed with high education,” said Kariuki.
The chief's remarks come in the wake of high number of youth who have been roaming at Kiamaina slum.
Kariuki noted that such youth pose a great challenge to the security in the country.
“If we fail to address the plight of these youth, they will resort to committing crime in community,” said Kariuki.
Kariuki urged youth to join the available village polytechnics to acquire necessary skills and knowledge in the fields of carpentry and tailoring.
