The Nakuru County government is now under fire after it emerged that it has been demanding and collecting taxes from People Living With Disabilities (PLWD).
These PLWDS allegedly are operating businesses in the county against the law.
Following this revelation, the chairman of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, Dr David Ole Sankok has asked the county government to correctly interpret the law as it is going against it.
“According to the constitution of Kenya and other legislations in place, disabled people are not supposed to pay taxes. Nakuru County is breaking the law and as the national chairperson of people with disabilities, I want to assure them that I am coming there,” said Sankok.
Sankok who spoke on Sunday when he met the businessmen at Nayo gardens in Nakuru said that it is wrong for the county governments to harass disabled people who are trying to eke a living.
He has also expressed his disappointment with the Nakuru County government for not joining them during the World Deaf Day celebrations at Nyayo Gardens in Nakuru town recently.
“For the county government not to even send a representative during that important day is a clear indication that they are not with us. Come 2017, we will also treat them the same way because if it was a political rally they would have all flocked there,” Sankok said.
