Nakuru County Public Health Officer, Samuel Kingo’ri, has said the county government will foot medical bills for the victims and survivors of the recent cholera outbreak.
Addressing journalists in Bahati in Nakuru on Tuesday, the health officer confirmed that 15 people have died since the outbreak hit the county three weeks ago.
He said at least 80 patients with cholera symptoms have been treated and discharged while several cases are being monitored.
“The county government will foot medical and mortuary bills for the cholera victims who succumbed and those that were admitted,” he said.
Kingo’ri asked relatives of the deceased to pick their bodies from the Rift Valley General Hospital for burial since all expenses have been catered for.
Meanwhile, the county has embarked on an extensive campaign to educate residents about cholera and other sanitation related diseases.
Kingo’ri says that public health officials have been deployed to all sub-counties to carry out sensitisation.
Other counties where cholera cases have been reported are Kiambu, Nairobi, Murang’a and Homabay
In a press statement sent to news rooms on Tuesday, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the outbreak has been contained.
Macharia stated that various mitigations have been put in place to curb the cholera outbreak.
