Nakuru county government is out to amass 420 million shillings needed for construction of 12,000 modern toilets.
This comes at a time when the county is racing against time to beat the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2020 with reports indicating that the county is currently losing an annual 972 million shillings to poor sanitation, this in turn resulting to an increase in cases of diarrhea and other diseases associated with poor environmental management especially among children.
According to the county Deputy Governor Eric Korir, the project will not only reduce the number of lives lost to such diseases but also save the county from treatment costs.
Speaking after opening one of the toilets in Naivasha,he said that the county has so far made a good progress with a good number of areas already declared safe.
''To date, 300 villages in the county have been declared ODF and we are on course to celebrate another 66 in Naivasha and further 140 in Rongai and Subukia sub-counties,'' he is quoted by the Nation Thursday.
