Environmentalists in Nakuru county now want its government to create a solar powered substation for informal settlements in the area. Kio Kinuthia cited that the substation would be able to provide power that will be distributed to the houses in areas like Kaptembwa, Rhonda, Flamingo, Barut and Kivumbuni. “We should be able to create a central place where the light will be distributed to each houses otherwise its useless to provide them with street light yet they use tin lamps in the houses,” he added Kio cited that the residents in such areas were low consumers of power hence the solar will be able to cater for all their power demands. “Most do not have heavy energy consuming equipment. In fact our research shows that they only need power to charge the phone, to read and to listen to their radio. This will require a very minimal amount whereas we would have changed their lives completely,” he added. Emily Mwangi cited that the solar powered panels would enable the county government rid costs related to payment of bills to Kenya Power. “Solar energy is cheap and affordable and if the county government can embrace the idea it will save millions of shillings while at the same time ensure that it means the demands of the residents.” She added
