Farmers in Nakuru County now want the government to crack down illegal traders who are selling fake animal products.
According to the farmers, majority of the agro vets have ended up selling soil and sawdust packaged as animal feeds.
“Recently, I went to buy salt for my cows only to find that it was red soil,” said Maina Mwangi, a farmer
He cited that the agro vets have been repackaging fake products in and selling them to unsuspecting farmers.
Joseph Wang’ombe noted that even the ingredients in the animal feeds were not right.
“What is indicated on the package is totally different. For example a package can state that it contains phosphorous and other minerals but when examined it is found to be maize flour,” cited Silvanus Karanja.
They are now calling on the Ministry of Livestock and agriculture to intervene before the situation worsens.
Nakuru Minister of Livestock and Agriculture Stanley Chepkwony added that they were already investigating the matter.
“We have already received complains pertaining to the quality of the goods that are sold in the county. We intend to start doing a background check and test the quality of the products through our government chemists. We will arrest and fine any trader that is caught selling the wrong products,” he noted.
