Farmers in Nakuru county are set to benefit from pyrethrum seedlings in a move to revive the sector.

The farmers are expected to use the offer to revamp the sub-sector, which has stalled for the last one decade.

The programme, which is set to be rolled out across the pyrethrum producing sub-counties in Nakuru by August this year targets to deliver over 100,000 tonnes of dry flowers annually.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the revival of the pyrethrum industry in the county is one of the measures to tackle unemployment within Nakuru.

Kinyanjui said the county has been the home of pyrethrum for a long time and its abrupt collapse is regrettable.

"Most of us have been taught and fed by the proceeds of pyrethrum and the collapse is regrettable, my government will put up more than 7000 acres of pyrethrum seedlings in a bid to revive the sector and create jobs," he said.

“Nakuru has the best weather for the pyrethrum crop, therefore, I would like to urge farmers to take up the challenge by engaging with one another,” the governor added.

His remarks have seen a group of farmers in Eburru in Gilgil sub-county start a campaign to revive pyrethrum growing.

The drive aims at reaching at least 3,000 farmers in the region.
