Nakuru farmers have been advised to grow tissue culture bananas so as to open its value worth in the market.
Speaking to farmers in Nakuru town, Dr Faith Wanjiru, an official from ministry of agriculture, said the tissue culture yields to over twenty per cent above the other bananas species and it is more economical for the farmers who have small pieces of land.
She said the banana species is disease resistant and added that it is ideal compared to other various species that are being planted in the region.
The officer said farmers should venture into large scale banana farming as they mature faster and can make farmers be self reliant and enable them attend to their social economic needs comfortably.
She added that the seedlings come with a variety such as Grand Maine Williams and EAH available at various commercial nurseries.
She added that the seedlings have been categorized to adopt various weather conditions favouring diverse climatic conditions in parts of Nakuru and its environs.
"This types of bananas mature early therefore a great advantage to farmers who may want to practice it on a large scale,” said Dr Wanjiru.
She also said it will be a source of food security especially when the country is experiencing drought due to the unpredictable weather patterns.
