Nakuru County 'first lady' Lucia Kinuthia has appealed to parents to help identify their peers who forced their girls to undergo Female Genital Mutilation. Ms Kinuthia claimed that the practice went on in many of the areas but went unnoticed as neighbours did not want to expose the ones behind the exercises. “We are afraid that the cases of FGM and early marriages are still rampant in the county but parents are unwilling to help the government control the vice," she said. "In some cases, they even know who undertakes this practice but are unwilling to bring them to book." She was speaking during her 'Read Aloud' campaign at Mau Summit primary school on Friday where she said the girl child still needed more attention to ensure she stayed in school. “We intend to give out sanitary towels to children to ensure that reasons like lack of pads do not push them away from school,” she added. Ms Kinuthia retaliated that the government was going to conduct a search which will see the arrest and prosecution of such parents. She praised the county government for its efforts to improve the education standards in the county, saying that performance in KCPE in 2014 improved compared to the previous year. Ms Kinuthia, who tipped the student on exam tactics, also promised to open a library to act as a resource centre for the school. She donated reading materials and sanitary towels for the girls in the area. School principal Johnson Irungu said the school has improved with several pupils admitted to national secondary schools.
