Fish farmers in Nakuru County are urging the county government to create proper fish storage facilities.
Addressing journalists at Kiamunyi farmers said that lack of proper storage facilities have often forced them to over mature their fish.
They said that they only harvest their fish when have an order thus overstocking their ponds.
“I only fish when I have an order. This has made my business to stagnate,” says Joseph Murimi, a farmer.
Murimi said that they had urged county government to consider helping them buy proper storage facilities.
Agnes Wanjira says that fish mongers are having hard time buying their products since most customers needed them fresh and young.
“They avoid aged fish since they claim that it affects the taste of the meat. It is also claimed not to be soft. Fishmongers have hence opted to import their stock from Kisumu,” notes Wanjira.
Nakuru County Livestock Minister Stanley Chepkwony has promised to look into the issue.
“We will analyse the possibility of having the fish grown and stored in a professional way,” said Chepkwony.
