Food vendors in Nakuru are accusing the local authorities of discrimination when banning food hawking after an outbreak of Cholera a month ago in the town.
Led by their Chaiman Peter Chamwama, a recently formed Milimani Small Business Welfare Group (MSBWG) is petitioning the Nakuru County Chief Health Officer Samuel Mwaura to investigate cases where public health officers were compromising a section of food vendors in the town despite of the ban he imposed on selling of food in public.
After attending a consultative meeting with members of the welfare on Tuesday at Railways estate Chamawama threatened that the welfare members would hold a demonstration to express their disatisfaction with the directive that he said was skewed.
“We have resolved to write a comprehensive complain letter to the Chief Health Officer because he is the one who released the memorandum announcing an indefinite ban on food hawking. It is unfortunate that this directive is not impartial. We want fairness and sincererity,’’said Chamwama.
The food vendor’s group leader added that the petition letter would include names and locations of food kiosks in the area openly operating in full knowledge of law enforcers.
“We have information that these people who are still in business while some of us have been rendered jobless are connected to powerful people in the government but we will not relent in fighting for our rights we will expose them,’’ warned Chamwama.
