The government has started a crackdown on donkey vendors who are employing under aged children to vend water
Chairman of the Implementation Committee in Nakuru Simon Wanango said that they intended to arrest and prosecute both the parents and their employees for failing to protect their children.
Wanango cited that the increased rate at which the children were dropping out of school was alarming; urging parents to ensure child labour is stopped.
“We have already sent people in the estates that will be able to pick up and indentify the children who are not going to school. We intend to stop this habit” he added
Naivasha donkey owners association chairman Joseph Ithendu welcomed the move, saying they had been trying to stop child labour but to no avail.
“We have called many meetings asking parents to refrain from turning their children into workers but it has not yielded any fruits. We pray that they should be arrested and hefty fines imposed on them so as to prevent such recurrence,” he cited
He appealed to the children to go back to school as this is the only way they would make bright futures for themselves.
“They should realize that it’s their own future they are ruining and go back to class. Otherwise they are creating problems for themselves,” he added.
