The head teachers claimed that they are forced to buy water from tankers and water distributors after every two weeks which costs a lot Crater primary school Head teacher Janet Okuto cited that the school owed the county half a million in water debts.

“We do not receive any water and we often buy water at a cost of ksh 5000 after every two weeks. This is just for the basic necessities like cleaning and cooking and this is barely enough,” she said.

Okuto cited that the school had not received any water since the inception of the Free Primary Education which was in turn affecting the sanitation of the school.

“We have 16 toilets which serve both the ECD and the Primary section. At one point the public health department wanted to shut down the school due to lack of water.

The FPE gives ksh 30 per pupil per term which cannot go to paying water bills,” she added Ms Rose Kisina of Menengai Primary school cited that there was need to ensure an adequate water supply in schools.

“Water bills used to be cost shared with the municipal council but now we are forced t look for our own means of sustaining water supply,” she added
