The family said that the boy was taken to St Elizabeth Medical Center near Nakuru town after he developed a fever but his condition worsened at the hospital after being injected.

"When he came in here he was walking but after they administered an injection, he stopped talking and became immobile. He could not even eat," said James Muigai, the uncle.

The uncle said the doctors told them they needed to transfer the boy to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment.

He said that the hospital did not have an ambulance and they had to find themselves one which they found out did not have an oxygen tank and on asking the hospital to lend them an oxygen tank, they were asked to deposit money for it.

"They said it would cost Sh101,000. We gave them Sh60,000 and brought a vehicle log book to act as security for the remaining amount. The doctor still refused," said Muigai.

The child's father, Benson Karanja said they had planned to look for an alternative means to take the boy to Kenyatta National Hospital but on reaching there they learned that it was too late.
